Nitinol(also known as Nickel-Titanium or NiTi) is a metal alloy, sometimes also called Shape Memory Alloy (SMA). Nitinol alloys exhibit two closely related and unique properties: shape memory and superelasticity. Shape memory refers to the ability of a material to undergo deformation at one temperature, and then recover its original shape upon heating above its "transformation temperature". Superelasticity occurs in a narrow temperature range just above the transformation temperature; in these conditions, no heating is necessary to return to the pre-deformation shape.
Nitinol is applied in medicine with its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and fatigue behavior. The main advantage of Nitinol is the smooth, controlled force it exerts upon activation. For example, as fixation devices for dental surgery, can exert constantly tooth-moving forces on the teeth in dental braces.
Nitinol bar(rod) is typically made of 54.5wt.%-57.0wt.% nickel and 43.0wt.%-45.5wt.% titanium and apply to medical products by ASTM F2063 standard.
